Roof shingles were flying last week as Rappahannock County played host to a group of dedicated young people who were visiting the county as part of Impact Virginia!
The Baptist sponsored youth mission brought together over 300 high school students from all over the state to perform basic maintenance on the houses of needy locals, from painting interior walls to fixing shaky porches.
“We find the youngsters would rather do this than go and play at King’s Dominion,” said John Heddleston, pastor of Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville. The Impact Virgina! volunteers are co-ed high school students who pay $75 to $180 to work hard for a week helping out with the basic construction jobs that low income, elderly or disabled households would have difficulty accomplishing on their own. The money is used to cover the students’ travel costs, while the materials used in the repairs are provided by the Virginia Baptist Association.
Over 300 of these student missionaries and their adult crew chiefs and chaperones called Culpeper Middle School home for the week of their mission trip, sleeping in the classrooms and showering in the gym.
“We pay money to sleep in a school and work on a roof,” explained 17-year-old Andy Davis, a student missionary from Fluvanna County on his fifth summer with Impact Virginia!
The volunteers worked bn porches and handicap ramps as well as roofs , and some crews in Rappahannock County were repainting houses and replacing rotten siding.
