The Rappahannock County Planning Commission held a public hearing on two proposed amendments to the family apartment provisions of the Rappahannock zoning code. They passed the proposal previously in closed session. The meeting Wednesday provided the public with an opportunity, after the fact, to speak and to question the Commission. The Board of Supervisors must now vote whether to enact the changes suggested by the Planning Commission.

In the law, a family apartment is a secondary apartment,, near a primary housesuch as a mother-in-law cottage or a garage apartment, built for family members to live in.

While you may not build two large houses right next to one another, or fill a single residential plot of land with rental houses, you may build a family apartment.

The code tries to make it difficult to use this exception as a loophole for building rental properties willy nilly around your property.

These changes would make the law easier and simpler to interpret and apply. They do not appear to affect the substance of the law.
