In 1763, Lord lair fax granted land in this area to Joseph Amiss and Joseph Bavse.
The early settlers were mostly English and French Huguenots.
In 1810, when application was made for a post office for the community, there was much discussion and debate as to the name of the town, Amissville or Bayse.
An election was held with anyone who owned land within a three-mile radius eligible to vote. Amissville won out over Bayse by one vote.
