obey the 55 MPH speed limit, is going to obey a 45 MPH speed limit? Or a 35 MPH speed limit? Or even a 25 MPH speed limit?
Should our law enforcement officials target motorcyclists? No. Absolutely not. The radar that is set up to help deter speeders should result in tickets to anyone who is breaking the laws of the highway, whether they are driving cars, motorcycles, trucks or horse drawn carriages.
Should law enforcement have a visible presence on Fodderstack Road, Crest Hill Road, Luray mountain and other favorite twisty roads in the county? Absolutely. Should they ticket anyone breaking the law? Absolutely. Is that targeting motorcyclists? It is no^. It is simply putting your resources where you know the problem exists.
I happen to know the sheriff in this county. He’s a good fellow, and he has some great people working for him. And I know he wants to get his arms around this problem. He, too, has limited resources. They can’t be everywhere at once.
And yet, somehow, we need to send a strong message. And that message should be, welcome to Rappahannock County. Come, sit with us, eat with us, and enjoy the beautiful piece of this planet we call home. But, if you misbehave and endanger the lives of the people who live here and the others who come here to visit, it’s going to cost you. Big time.
