airlifted to Fairfax Hospital. The third motorcyclist, Darrel Compton of Andrews Air Force Base, was transported to Fauquier Hospital with multiple fractures and Rauf Rashid of Bowie, Maryland was driving the second motorcycle and sustained only minor injuries. Roberts and his companions in the pickup were unharmed.
Crest Hill Road
The third accident over the weekend involving a group of motorcyclists occurred on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at the one lane bridge on Route 647. Bruce Hagues and Edward H. Coleman lost control of their Honda RC-51 motorcycles while crossing the bridge and collided with the railings which line the bridge. The railings were destroyed and the motorcycles totaled, but both men escaped with no injuries.
Sherertz believes that Rappahannock County is particularly attractive to groups of motorcyclists because of its winding roads and mountainous terrain. The sheriff claims that some riders use the roads of the area as a timed racetrack.
“Many people choose to ignore the belief that there’s a web site out there . . .they can post their best time going from the bottom of the mountain to the top of the mountain.” If such a website were found, police could seize the vehicles of those involved for participating in “a prearranged contest of speed.”
“Younger folks get Daytona style racing bikes with clip on handlebars and fairings. If one of them wants to get away from you, they’re going to do it,” explained Sherertz.
