for six years now. And the latest addition to the shop workforce is Eubanks’ grandniece Victoria Hudson.
Longtime regulars
Some old timers wait for Eubanks’ chair to be free, though. It’s what they’re used to: “Almost all the people who wait for him he grew up with,” Hudson tells us. Eubanks also makes house calls upon occasion for a few clients who are getting on in years and are shut in these days. There’s no extra charge, it’s just a community service.
One of those who wait for his chair to be free is Rappahannock native Downing Hitt, who popped in one afternoon recently with his granddaughter Kayla Robey.
Hitt has been coming to Eubanks to get sheared for more than fifty years. He and Eubanks drove school buses together for some 17 years. Eubanks still drives one, as he has for the last forty years in Rappahannock. Asked if he had any dirt on Eubanks from all those years they’ve known one another, Hitt replied, “John’s all right. AD we need is a few more like him.”
On the afternoon Hitt and granddaughter popped in, there was talk of goings on around the area. A Mr. Tbm Shenk recounted that at the racetrack in Luray recently, they’ve been selling beer at the race, and fights have been breaking out, and aD present agreed that selling beer at a race was asking for trouble. Eubanks was able to help a patron who was having trouble finding someone to repair their car seats. “You know, Fve got the card of a fellow on my board. He’s done work for me on my barber chairs,” he offered.
Debate ovei* Virginia road maintenance came up, with Shenk opining that “even if it doesn’t need repair, they pave it every year,” while stylist Burke rejoined “they better pave 522”.
You can get restaurant advice and reviews there too. Burke and Shenk both praised Southern Kitchen, over in the VaDey, and Eubanks put a vote in for Johnny Appleseed, which caused some dispute. And local travels and goings on: Shenk, who recently returned from St. Johns, U.S. Virgin Islands, tells us “you ain’t gonna see Buddy Lucas, he’s gone to Myrtle Beach”.
On another day not long ago, the main topic of discussion was the recent passing of another local icon, Carson Johnson. Several folks spoke about his funeral and in praise of his long history and public service in the county, as weU as his stature as a veteran of WWII.
