Johns pointed out that a victory just three games into the season should give Rappahannock a much-needed psychological boost. The Lady Panthers waited 10 games a year ago before winning their first game.
“The win gives us some confidence,” Johns added. “We knew our potential. We just needed to start to realize it.”
The Warren Wildcats, who play in the Group AA ranks, led most of the game. But with 3:35 left, junior forward Kim Hutcheson took a pass from senior guard Rebecca Tupper and hit a lay-up to give Rappahannock a 40-39 lead. After a Wildcat misfire, Tupper took a pass from Johns and scored for a 42-39 lead with just 2:28 left.
Warren County pulled within 42-41 on a lay-up from junior guard Erica Phillips with just 1:39 left in the game. Then, Johns hit a string of free throws in the last minute to ice the game.
