“What was really cool was the link between Stratford Hall in the Northern Neck, where Robert E. Lee grew up, and Arlington House, which was his home before the Civil War,” she said. “And there is a connection between his family and that of George Washington, who owned Mount Vernon. It’s fascinating, really.”
Masson said that it was a thrill to wander through some of the great houses along the James River, like Shirley and Berkley, and the Virginia House, outside of Richmond.
“One of the unusual houses was the Virginia House,” she said. “It’s owned by the Virginia Historical Society, and they brought over parts of the priory from Warwick, England, but they added a wing. It was really fun to tour this house. It has four acres of gardens that took the owner 20 years to do with her landscape architect, and they have a garden party every year.”
