Many of the customs associated with the Winter Solstice derive from stories of a mighty battle between the dark and the light, whichvwas won by the light.
Fourth century Christians chose this time, and specifically December 25 which was celebrated as the birthday of the Persian Sun-God, Mithra, to. mark the birth of the Savior, a natural choice given the existing rituals celebrating the triumph of light over darkness.
There are numerous festivals, celebrations and rituals which use candles and light during this time: Hanukkah, Twelfth Night, the Christmas candle and Advent wreath, the Yule log and St. Lucy’s Day are just a few.
The Lantern Walk is a celebration of all these rituals, and a way for students, families and friends to mark this time of year and share it with the community.
