Fans of Virginia’s famous homes may find a new favorite book. Titled “Historic Houses of Virginia,” the book was written by local author Kathryn Masson. Masson said that she found the task somewhat daunting.
Tve always wanted to write a book on Virginia, and the publisher wanted me to do this,” Masson explained. “It was very intimidating. I have four private residences in here, and the rest are museum homes.”
The book contains chapters about some of the most famous houses in Virginia, from the Governor’s Palace in Colonial Williamsburg and the Executive Mahsion in Richmond to Monticello and Mount Vernon. Local houses like Oatlands south of Leesburg and Long Branch and Carter Hall in nearby Clarke County made the book as well as 14 others.
“I could only put in 20,” Masson explained. “I put in Oatlands because of the history in the house. I want this book to be for people who may have been to these houses, but who may not have been recently. For example, millions of people have been to Mount Vernon, but they’ve opened some entirely new pavilions that are really interesting. So even if you’ve been through these houses, I think that you will find something new.”
Masson said that she is still amazed at the access she was given to complete her project.
