Dominion insists burying a line would be cost-prohibitive and technologically infeasible. It plans to build about 30 miles of the Virginia portion the transmission line, costing the utility about $300 million. Burying the line would increase that figure tenfold, according to Dominion.
Dominion and Allegheny so far have held public information workshops in Middleburg (Nov. 28), Marshall (Nov. 29) and Warren County (Dec. 4). More than 500 people attended the session in Middleburg and more than 700 showed up for the Marshall meeting. At both meetings, residents checked maps of possible routes to see whether or not they would be directly affected. At both meetings, heated discussions were held with representatives of Dominion Power, with PEC handing out anti-Dominion Tshirts and signs.
