1 knew we were in for it” when leaping into the breeding business, Daiyl Stout said with a chuckle, “but we wanted to get in at the top.” She said that, in addition to Zarr, Stoneledge houses three other stallions — Welsh ponies Otteridge Starkist and Otteridge Foxtrot, and Dartmoor Famley Cockade. “The Dartmoor is actually for sale,” she said, already planning for the future. “But we hope to replace him with a Thoroughbred stallion, maybe.”
Stoneledge Farm is located in the north end of the Valley, at the foot of the Blue Ridge not far from the Shenandoah River. The name Stoneledge, Teddy Stout explained, was picked as a farm name because of the limestone ledges that dot the 176acre former family-run cattle farm.
Still very much a family operation, Daryl Stout recalls last year, when Teddy spent months putting in more than 9,000 feet of board fencing, along with remodeling an original bank bam. “He also built me a new custom bam, 60 by 120. I’m glad I married a builder,” she said with a grin.
