Clifford Williams has one memory that’s 24 years old. He’s driving home to meet his family in Culpeper Village Apartments. He spots unmarked police cars and wonders where they are going. Then he watches in horror as they park in hunt of his house.
Bystanders have draped a sheet over a body in front of the apartment. Clifford pushes through the crowd to find that the body beneath the sheet is his teenage wife Rebecca, raped and bleeding from stab wounds.
She tells him the attacker was a black man. And then she puts her hands to her face' before becoming silent.
Twenty-four years later the murder still haunts him. He hasn’t bought a newspaper since; reading about it just opens old wounds.
“It really affected me a lot,” Williams says today. “I*ve had a hard time with it, a hard time dealing with people now.”
