In 1984 Earl Washington Jr., above, was sentenced to die for the 1982 rape and murder of Rebecca Williams. After 18 years on death row, he was set free. Kenneth Maurice Tinsley goes on trial next week for the Williams attack.

Washington’s confession, according to court testimony, was riddled with inaccuracies. He said that Williams was black; she was white. He said she was short; she was 5-foot-8. He said he stabbed her “once or twice”; she was stabbed 38 times.
