house, but bring it up to 21st century standards, they have meticulously searched for the right materials, colors, and fabrics to enhance that look. For example, Adams and Brown have incorporated an old fireplace that wets in a bedroom but turned it around to face the library where all guests can relax with a good book or magazine and enjoy the warmth and beauty of a roaring fire on a cold evening.
D6cor was a collaboration among the new owners and their architect and builders. Handsome paneling was installed in several rooms and is most noteworthy in the sun room, which is now used as a breakfast room for guests. The comfortable owner’s quarters are separated from the guest accommodations by the sun room/breakfast room.
Among the many things that strike your eye as you walk into the Gay Street Inn is its fine collection of paintings, many by local artists of some note, like June Jordan, Tucker Hill, Mimi Rogers, and others. And, of course, there are more than several extraordinary landscapes by Kevin Adams himself that grace the walls of the Inn.
A number of his more stunning paintings are those which he painted on site in France, Italy, and Russia. But since his love affair with the Rappahannock landscape, Adams has painted and captured the beauty of Old Rag, the “Peak,” White Oak Canyon, and other scenic landscapes closer to home.
Two projects remain to be accomplished this spring: one is finishing a new fifth bedroom suite for guests on the second floor, and a garSge studio for Kevin across the street and in front of the Inn.
