“Zarr is an exceptionally handsome horse,” Canard said of the stallion’s instant popularity, both when his career began five years ago, and now, in Virginia. “He is very correct, and passes that on. His get win on the line and under saddle. He really stamps that athleticism.”
Another filly, 5-year-old Follow The Moon, was reserve champion in the 2002 Wheeler national championships as a yearling, and continues to win today in the broodmare division.
“We feel like he’s going to be a big hit,” Daiyl Stout added. “We have had a lot of calls on Zarr already.”
The Stoneledge stallions will ship to Equine Reproduction Concepts in nearby Amissville for the breeding season. “They have a 100 percent conception rate” with Stoneledge mares, said Canard. Daryl Stout added that having the stallions at ERC means that mare owners can do a “one-stop shop” for breeding management, foaling, artificial insemination and pregnancy checks.
Canard said that ERC, too, will handle foaling duties on a number of Stoneledge’s mares, the “maiden” or first-time broodmares. “I’ll foal the others at the farm,” he said. Many of the farm’s pony mares are for sale, both bred and open mares, Canard added. “But we’re lucky to have such great resources here in Virginia.”
The best resource, though, is on the hoof, Canard said. “On the show circuit, they say all the ‘good’ horses come from Virginia.” He glanced over to Zarr, still showing his paces. “I think that’s still true.”
