While the Virginia State Police continues to investigate Culpeper County Sheriff Lee Hart for a series of allegations, the ranks of those speaking out against his management tactics are growing.
Although Hart denies any wrongdoing, he remains silent on the details and specific allegations.
“I don’t think that would be appropriate while the investigation is going on at this time,” Hart said. “In an ongoing investigation like this, we do not want to impede or in any way hamper the investigation. We just want for this to be as complete and swift as possible, and we’ll discuss it at that time.”
The State Police 7th division, located in Fairfax, will spearhead the investigation.
The allegations were originally filed to the State Police by Scott Jenkins, shortly before resigning from the Sheriffs Office in June 2004. Jenkins is currently running for sheriff; Hart has yet to announce if he will seek re-election.
Hart said that he was first contacted by State Police investigators about two weeks ago.
