Johnson noted that she had lived in the county for a long time and knew what it was like to pay taxes.
“Your taxes are rising because of property values, not because of the school budget,” she said.
“I have gone through this budget with fine-toothed combs,” she added. “If we cut it even more it will be detrimental to our kids.”
Wesley Mills, who represents the Jackson District, gloomily predicted the future as the night wore on.
“I have been adding up the figures in my head, and I have a real fear of what this situation will look like in 10 years,” he said.
Rosa Crocker, the representative for the Wakefield District, said it is important to unite as a community and bring their problem to the state.
“The problem is that we receive less additional funding from the state every year,” she said. “It would be nice to get the community as excited about this issue as they are about the power lines.”
