I remember the time that one of Mom’s first grandsons, E.J. Pullen, was staying at the house while his Mom, my sister, Mary Alice, went shopping or somewhere. Mom, as usual, was boiling a big pot of potatoes for supper and E.J. was hanging around the kitchen. When the potatoes were done and Mom was pouring off the water, she asked E.J. if he would like some.' “Yes, Grandma, I love it.”
Mom put some potato water in a bowl, and with a pinch of salt and pepper and, I suspect, a little bigger patty of butter than normal, and gave him a spoon. He was still a little fellow, and she didn’t want him to bum himself drinking it from a cup.
E.J. sat there and ate every drop of that potato water with a spoon, and never said a word. When he was finished, he looked at Mom, and she asked him, “Was it any good, son?”
E. J. replied, “Yes, Grandma, it was good. But, when my Mama makes potato soup, she puts potatoes in it.”
That became one of my Mom and Dad’s favorite stories to tell at family gatherings. There were many others, but since it is just about time to get your potatoes in the ground, I thought you might enjoy this one. Also, I stopped by the co-op, and they have received their seed potatoes. If we can get it to stop snowing long enough, maybe we can get them planted. Don’t wait too long.
