You can make your space look more formal, casual, or contemporary by how you arrange your accessories. For example, if you were going to accessorize a mantel over a fireplace in a rather formal room, you would want to be very symmetric in your arrangement. Perhaps a large painting would be in the center of the wall over the mantel and pairs of identical vases, candlesticks, topiaries, or other objects perfectly matched and balanced would be placed on each side.
