Maybe the large ■ painting would be off to one side, and next to it might be a vase or simple sculpture, or a ■ couple of smaller paintings. Again, balance is very important, but in a more free form manner and accessories in a contemporaiy settdngneed to be very carefully edited, leaving each piece to speak for itself, often with a wall background of either very strong color or “museum” white.
In larger homes, with open v floor plans, accessorizing can be quite challenging. Huge, bare walls need filling, and personalities may be lost unless accessorizing is carefully accomplished. Tapestries, murals, screens, large plants and sculpture fill the expansiveness in this type of home. Color on the walls and in the art is extremely important and need to make a statement. Often displaying one large piece instead of several finer, small ones adds much more “punch”. If you do have small items to display in a large home, the best idea would be to group like items to make them stand out as a whole. On the other hand, a small home may get cluttered, and needs as much attention to accessorizing in proportion to itself. Take out what you like the least, and show what you love. Perhaps you could rotate your favorite collections.
