Besides Gessner, Bobby Czekaj, Russell, Will Miller, Travis Jenkins, L.B. Settle and Jonathan Butler all had at least one hit for the Panthers. Sophomore Chase Tupper, Jenkins added, did not have a hit but “put the ball in play.”
Rappahannock County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Gessner doubled and scored on a Miller single. Warren County’s lone run came in the bottom of the first on a passed ball and an error.
Gessner’s solo shot gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Then, in the fifth, Settle singled to right. Erick Montague pinchran for Settle and stole second. Back-to-back bunt singles from Butler and Czekaj produced one run. After Russell sacrificed, Warren County issued an intentional walk to Gessner. Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to right to give the Panthers a 4-1 lead.
Rappahannock County added a final run in the top of the seventh. Butler led off with a bunt single. With two out, Gessner was walked intentionally. Miller doubled in Butler.
“The good part of the game is that we only had five strikeouts,” Jenkins said. “That’s not bad for a first game.”
