three jury- recommended life sentences, as well as the death penalty for the murders of seven members of two families there.

On Feb. 28, both attorneys traveled to visit Gray in the Sussex State Prison, where he is currently being held.

According to Bruns, during a two-and-a-half hour conversation, Gray expressed a desire to have them represent him again.

“It makes sense, given the relationship we have with the client,” Bruns said. “He didn’t express any reservations at the time we talked to him.”

After his attorneys were set, Substitute Judge Paul Peatross moved on to set a time line for the trial. After Bruns commented that the case in Richmond “was a bit tight” on time, Gray waived his right to a speedy trail.

“This is a multi-jurisdictional operation, so it is complicated. It was like herding cats in Richmond,” Bruns said.
