Gessner at the bat

If Jeff Jenkins had any questions about his Rappahannock County High School varsity baseball team’s ability to hit, he got his answer in the first game of the 2006-07 season.
The Panthers pounded out 10 hits, including a solo home run from senior Adam Gessner, as they defeated host Warren County, 5-1, in a nondistrict contest Tuesday evening.
Gessner, a transfer student from Pennsylvania, had a stellar debut for Rappahannock County. Besides his solo home run in the top of the third, he also doubled and scored in the first inning and tossed 6.1 innings of six-hit baseball. He walked five and struck out three.
“Adam throws hard. He’s got a live fastball,” Jenkins said. “He’s going to win some games for us.”
Senior left-hander Ethan Russell got the final two outs in the bottom of the seventh to dose out the game.
Hitting the baseball this early in the season should make Jenkins smile. Last season, Rappahannock County struggled with consistency at the plate.
