Diane Bruce, in reminiscing about the Fodderstack, remembered the year that the starting gun failed to fire. The runners, not bothered by the lack of a signal, started to run anyway.
She also remembered the time when the pick-up truck, which usually leads the runners for the first few hundred yards away from the starting point, stalled in the middle of the road. It created a barrier, around which the runners then had to make their way.
