Then, with no sponsors to help defray costs, the first race was launched in 1978 with approximately 150 runners participating.
Over the last three years the average has risen to about 200, and usually of these about 20 are walkers.
In 1978 the entry fee of $5 covered some of the logistical costs, as well as the cost of tshirts that were designed by local artist Lois Manookian.
Rae Gatke, who at that time ran a store called “Nature’s Foods,” sponsored the race in that second year,
