Last month, when the Rappahannock supervisors gave the School Board authority to contract for emergency repairs to the elementary school roof, they did so with the condition that the roof be tapered, taking action after hearing that adding slope would increase the project cost by $3,000 to $4,000 — at most.
At this Tuesday’s School Board meeting, superintendent Robert E stab rook recalled that in a letter dated April 20, E.M. Martin Company, contractors for the repair project, reported that the original $27,760 estimate on emergency repairs to the RGES north wing would not increase, even though the roof design was changed to include the slight slope for improved drainage dictated by the Board of Supervisors.
“Their next letter has left the architect and the superintendent pretty angry,” E stab rook said. “We received the letter today and we’re now finding that the cost will be $39,760 — $12,000 more.” He added that the architect was annoyed over the lack of timeliness in providing the School Board with the revised cost estimate for a sloped roof. “He’s further
