We have one outstanding athlete in each event but most of the district schools have at least two with experience. With a few exceptions, the boys who placed —-both for Rappahannock and our opponents — were athletes with (Hie or more years of experience. Half our boys are new to track this season. They should do much better, next year,” she said.
The rain tripped up a few athletes. Pole vaulters ■lipped, long jumpers slid and high jumper skidded into the bar. Rappahannock’s Katheryn Davis, expected to place in the long jump, took a bad fell as she hydroplaned across a puddle on her approach to the pit, knocking her breath out and shaking her confidence. Clarence Pendleton, a consistent standout in the high jump who advanced to regionals last year as a junior, banged into the bar as his water logged tennis shoes slipped out from under him. Their mishaps in Thursdays’ monsoon knocked both from regional competition in those events.
