There have been moments of intense satisfaction at reporting what I felt were happy endings to stories the newspaper had covered. I liked writing that the Park land swap had been forestalled; that the solution to Sperryville’s pollution problem was at last at hand with the award of federal and state grants for construction of an affordable sewer system; that after eight years of effort, a building program at the high school finally found at least preliminary approval with the supervisors.
I’ve met formers and beekeepers, foresters and game wardens, glass blowers and basket weavers, potters, painters and artists at the loom, writers and politicians — people I would have missed if it hadn’t been for my work.
