“We would have been starting over pounding pavement, dropping ads,” she said.
Ironically, the first weekend in August, the Sperryville Antique Market drew a crowd. “And the crowds never stopped coming,” Peggy smiled.
Learn Step By Step
“Without question, starting a business I knew nothing about was like learning to walk,” Peggy said, recalling those first months. The Smiths had to learn about advertising, and they had to learn fast. “The most difficult part was getting our name on the map,” Peggy said. The Smiths had hoped to establish business by word of mouth. “You just can’t beat it,” Peggy noted.
Initially, though, word of mouth wasn’t enough. The Smiths teased the market of fickle antique shoppers by placing daily and weekly newspaper ads. Still, more was needed. They checked into television advertising, and decided on a 30-second spot.
