Asked for the firm’s explanation of the difference between the original $3,000 to $4,000 projection on the sloped roof and the new $12,000 estimate that will up the cost of the emergency roof repairs by 43 percent, Estabrook said that, according to the architect, the roofers had “neglected to add in labor costs” and “miscalculated the cost of materials.”
The reaction from the board members was unanimous: professionals aren’t supposed to make those kinds of mistakes. They also recalled that a second firm bidding on the roof repair project had set a price only $300 to $400 higher than Martin’s.
Estabrook reminded the board members that they were able to handle the emergency roof repairs with a simple change order only because they were contracting with the firm that had won the bid for this year’s gymnasium roof repair project.
