Barbara Gentry, Rappahannock’s Extension Homemaker of the Year, is a busy lady. At 71, she has twice as much energy as most people half her age. But as many hours as she devotes to her volunteer activities, she makes sure she reserves time for meetings of the Flint Hill Extension Homemakers’ Chib.
She’s been a member for 48 years, joining shortly after she first came to Rappahannock as a bride. “My mother-in-law belonged. It was such a nice place to go during the day — our meetings were always held during the day back then. And I learned so much. Then as my children came along, I learned so much more.”
Gardening, sewing, tailoring — she mastered skills she put to use for her family. “Times have changed. We were so poor then, at least by todays standards. We had so few labor saving devices,” Barbara recalled. “From the Extension Homemakers’ programs we learned to make do with what we had, especially during the war years. We recycled things. We just didn’t call it that,” she added with a laugh.
