“I’d make five, six, maybe 10 wreaths a day. They sold very well before Christmas.”
The Burkes decided to put the same homespun touch into Country Elegance, the large building that has become the main store on the property. They decided on a Christmas shop, offering handmade items year-round. They attended more craft shows in order to learn more about the trade. They added consignment items such as baskets, made by a woman in Warrenton and quilts, sent in by friends from Alabama and Missouri. They made the shop bright and cheerful, and visitors are overwhelmed by the selection of unusual, inexpensive gifts. It’s one other thing the Burkes said they learned firsthand: Quality and economy can go hand in hand.
“We have some crafts here that people can afibndT Brad said. “So many/people said we had darn good prices and quality. We’ve received letters from Maryland and New Jersey.”
