According to Extension Agent Birgitt Thornhill, the flying male moths are here already in significant numbers. But the females who lay the eggs that hatch into hungry caterpillars are in evidence only in isolated pockets and along the mountain ridge top at Chester Gap.
“You can catch male moths for i years and years and years without A finding egg masses,” Mr. Finn said. And even after the egg masses start appearing, it may be years again before the larvae reach numbers large enough to cause significant defoliation, he said.
