Technology: An important tool
There is an important tool we can use - must use - in our efforts to provide “equal access” to a first-rate education for all our children. That tool is technology. Electronic classrooms, computers to help young children master the three R’s and to improve the skills of low achievers; electronic communications networks for more efficient school management; satellite receivers, video disks; these are a few of the technological tools that we can use to promote equity of educational opportunity.
An example of how technology can help to correct disparities in curriculum and teaching is the electronic classroom at Varina High School in Henrico County; now into its third year and Virginia’s most important technological investment so for. Varina’s one-way video, two-way audio system connects 27 schools (31 high schools) which otherwise could not have made such courses available. This is an encouraging beginning.
