The first step is the hole. The right size hole is simply one that is a good bit wider and deeper than the root system of the plant.
If the hole is dug deeper than the root system and then filled back in, it loosens any compacted soil beneath the plant. This will encourage deeper rooting and improve drainage, both of which improve the plant’s chances of survival and growth. If the hole is too deep be sure to firmly place the soil back in beneath the plant.
Be sure to firm the soil beneath the plant to prevent settling. Some of these small container plants have root systems only six inches deep or so, and if the plant settles only an inch or two deeper it can make a very big difference.
If a shrub is planted too deep, its deep roots die. Although the plant will try to develop a shallower root system, its early setback will likely keep it from growing into a vigorous, hardy plant. And its chance of surviving the first really harsh weather is reduced.
A point to remember is to plant the shrub with its upper roots at ground level. Place very little soil on top of the roots. Pull the soil to the sides, rather than on top of the roots, and then cover it with a good mulch. Mulching has far greater value to the plant’s survival and growth than soil, greater value to the plant’s survival and growth than soil.
