kept his perspective. Two of his favorite mementoes are a key from a Chinese gun-running boat, captured when an intelligence officer noted a small island, and a notecard from an admiral who lost a bet to Mr. Holachuh about the accuracy of a briefing on the activities of Fidel Castro.
Of course, there were pressures on Capt. Holschuh in Washington and to escape them, his family, which by then included a son and daughter, looked to Rappahannock. A friend had bought land here, some of it almost straight up and down hills, and sold the Holschuhs some in 1956 for $25 an acre. Here they built a cabin and spent most weekends getting away from it all. A steep, winding driveway guaranteed privacy. Fifteen years ago when Capt. Holschuh retired, he and Helen moved here permanently.
They have both done a lot of volunteer work. Mrs. Holschuh is active in the Rappahannock Garden Club and the Historical Society. “Howdy” is trustee, treasurer, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. They often show local groups slides from their frequent travels.
The Holschuhs have also had tragedy to deal with in an otherwise ftilfilling life: their son died in the Las Vegas hotel fire some years ago. Photos of the family, their son and a daughter who is married now, share space on the stairway with recent shots of their two grandchildren.
The newspaper has been a way of picking up an interest which got derailed a long while back. He has done the V.O.E. for six years and currently he’s looking forward to a legislative assignment. He’ll be both a delegate and a reporter at the “Silver Haired Legislature” in Richmond this Coming August and he’s looking forward to it.

Last, but not least, we’re glad the Holschuhs chose our community, the Boston-Castleton area, for their retirement.
