Mr. Massie added that the owner would sell both the 76 acres of pasture and woods and another 16-acre tract with a house and barn only as a whole; that he did not desire to keep the smaller parcel if a landfill was sited next to it. The price for both parcels is $258,000.
He said another factor against it is that “it’s a little hard to get to.” The property is on Rt. 626, 10 miles from Rt. 211 on the east and 3.6 miles from Rt. 522 at the Scrabble intersection.
The committee report also noted that “this site is highly visible from Rt. 626 and many neighboring houses.”
Supervisor Newbill Miller said that “from my knowledge of the property, that is the proper evaluation.”
Board to meet with BFI
At Monday’s meeting, the board agreed to meet with a representative of Browning-Ferris Inc., the Winchester-based hauling firm which was the sole bidder for the County's contract to dispose of its waste until a new landfill facility is approved.
