An ambitious plan by the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries to monitor acid levels in more than 400 streams in the state has been delayed due to the heavy rains this spring.
Jack Hoffman, chief of the Fish Division, said that the samples collected will be analyzed to determine 50 streams which have low acid neutralization capacity. These streams will be monitored bimonthly during the next two years.
Data collected during the sampling will be used as baseline information to evaluate the current status and sensitivity of Virginia’s trout streams. Rick Webb, project manager, explained that the first phase of the project will establish the baseline chemical composition of
