“I’m certainly thankful, too, that I have had a very able and dedicated group of administrators to work with. You are only as good as the people surrounding you - I’ve been blessed.”

Mr. Estabrook said that the date of his departure has not yet been set. He said he has “offered to help out (with the transition) in any way I can. I have indicated that I will stay through July if it will help the board or the district.”

The School Board, Mrs. Massie reported, “is at the present time attempting to secure the services of someone we’d like to see as Mr. Estabrook’s successor . . . continuity is extremely important in a school district, and we have always encouraged all of our teachers and administrators to do their course so we would be in a position to hire and promote within the school district.”

“The board has made an offer, and we will have to wait and see if that individual will accept. If that worked out,” the chairman said, “the board would feel that we are home scot-free - that we would have a very able person to succeed Mr. Estabrook. We would feel very comfortable.”

Mrs. Massie added that the person is now considering the offer, and has promised to give the board an answer “as soon as possible,” after taking into account personal and professional considerations.

She added that, in serving the school district since 1972, she has never questioned the decision of a teacher to stay in the classroom rather than move to administration, or that of a member of the staff who wished to move on to further their professional growth. “It’s always hard to lose a good person, but you understand anyone who wants to advance their career.”

It is a difficult time for the district, she added, with major projects like capital outlay still underway, “there’s still a lot of work to be done. But,” she hastened to add, “the board feels that we have a lot of very fine teachers. We are very encouraged with the educational progress we are making in the county.”
