In presenting the championship plaque to the school, Charles McGlothlin, head of Wakefield’s Mathematics Department, commended the students for their victory over much larger schools. He said that the tests are very challenging and require creative problem-solving skills.
The contest featured one section each six weeks during the school year. All high school math skills except calculus were included.
An example contest question was, “Brian and Keith toss 1986 and 1987 fair coins, respectively. What is the probability that Keith gets more heads than Brian?”
W. T. Woodson was the top scoring school in the state with a score of 173.
