In other budget matters heard by the supervisors, the board:
• Approved Mr. Poling’s request that the county’s contribution of $3,100 to the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council be maintained. Without the assistance of the council in securing grants, he told the supervisors, the county would not have the fleet of rescue vehicles it now has.
In addition, he pointed out, the council furnishes the extensive training necessary for rescue personnel to become state-certified in emergency medicine procedures.
“The amount of training is unbelievable,” Mr. Miller agreed.
“It’s almost like being a doctor,” added Chairman Hubert Gilkey. “You just don’t get a shingle.”
• Approved the budgets of the Commissioner of Revenue’s office and the County Treasurer, as submitted by Beverly Atkins and Frances Foster, respectively.
• Heard Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke say that, because of a clerical error, his budget is larger than it should be. The mistake will be corrected, although the savings will not be realized by the county because, as a constitutional officer, the money in the line item for his office staff is paid from the state through tiie compensation board.
• Accepted Clerk of the Circuit Court Diane Bruce’s recommendation that her budget be cut by $1,200 by reducing the line items for printing and postage.
• Accepted Zoning Administrator John McCarthy’s suggestion that the $1,400 budgeted for planning services for the county’s Planning Commission be deleted. Although $500 was transferred to the Zoning Administrator’s budget for printing, a savings of $900 was realized by the action.
• Deleted a $1,500 request by j Tippy Jenkins for a ; new radio for his transport vehicle.'
• Heard Extension Agent Birgitt Thornhill’s request that the county pick up the cost of the long distance business calls from her office, since the WATS line which has served the office will be removed this year. She told the supervisors that Virginia Tech will pay the costs if the county will not, if the county is willing to submit the bills for reimbursement. The board agreed to that plan.
• Denied Frances Thornton’s request for $700 in additional monies for the Mental Health and Mental Retardation fund, due to a “considerable increase” in the need and costs of substance abuse counseling, a cost-of-living increase for its employees, and the residence fees for Western State patients referred by the county, which are its responsibility.
• Agreed to Dr. John Einarson’s request that the increased appropriation for the Health Department be maintained. He explained that most of the increase comes from the increase in malpractice insurance for physicians covered by the department, which is now paid by the state.
