Clyde Lee of Washington, Virginia, will be having her first oneperson exhibition of photographs at Middle Street Gallery during the month of June. The show of experimental photographic arrangements of Rappahannock’s landscapes opens Saturday, June 6, from 6 until 9 p.m.
Mrs. Lee was born in Mississippi to a literary family - her father was Harper novelist James Robert Peery. She and her husband Robert Lee, a painter, have lived around the world because of his work in the U.S. Foreign Service. The experience of being in India, Turkey, North Africa, Mexico and France has stimulated an interest in the unity among the art of these cultures, as well as their differences, with a particular fascination for the powerful influence of ancient Persian art.
Her work in “New Rappahannock Views” involves techniques of her own making - a “kaleidoscope” approach where many images of the same subject are put together, the use of “AFTER Imagery” where the blue sky becomes orange, red and yellow leaves become blue and purple, and “Manipulation” of the print during the developing process with scratches and markings. (The human eye sees a lingering image that is the complementary or opposite color from that just viewed. Stare at a window that has light coming in, then close your eyes tightly and you will see the after image.)
