Flash flooding remains the nation’s most dangerous weather-related disaster threat, according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Services.
Of the 28 Presidential disaster declarations during 1986, 21 were flood-related. With 1987 less than half over, Virginia has experienced two major floods which caused several deaths as well as substantial property damage over large areas.
Spring is the time of the year most prone to flash floods, but they are a danger year-round. Usually associated with mountainous areas, they actually occur anywhere.
In the mountains, it most often happens when heavy rainstorms cause small streams to swell with violent torrents of rushing water.
