The Virginia Department of Education has scheduled several public hearings in connection with proposed revisions of the Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia and the Standards of Quality.
The new accreditation standards, if adopted by the Virginia Board of Education, will govern the accreditation of public elementary and secondary schools in the state. The proposed revisions to the accrediting standards emphasize literacy, including the use of phonics for teaching beginning reading, with increased emphasis on writing in all grades, as well as spelling, listening, speaking and mathematics.
