Even at this early stage in our understanding of the potential of technology in education it is obvious that our middle schools should be first in line for greater use of computer instruction. Middle school students will be the ones preparing for the Literacy Passport.
The computer has proven itself useful in helping children sharpen literacy and basic math skills. We know, too, that computers are useful in providing remedial help for “at risk” middle-school youngsters — the ones in danger of becoming dropouts unless they master the necessary skills in reading, writing and arithmetic.
For this and other reasons, the Commission recommended that, by 1990, middle school teachers be provided with microcomputers for use in their classrooms, and be provided with instruction in how to use them.
