one said that the shelter has recently moved to a larger building, and the community support groups require more money. SAFE, she pointed out, has counseling programs for the abuser as well as the victims. In the future, the organization hopes to offer preventive education to all tenth graders in the planning district.
"I think there are many more people in the county who could use these services,” John McCarthy pointed out. “That’s one reason I wanted her to come today. ”
In reply to a query from Mr. Lane, Ms. Sanders told the board that SAFE does not duplicate the welfare department services.
“She’s been an invaluable help to me,” Mrs. Kreitler affirmed. “Our people need a place to go and think - and we have no place to send them. I don’t think she’s ever said W to me.”
Mr. Henry said he perceived a problem with opening a line item which will grow each year. He added that although the group professed to promote family unity, “the brochure I just read seems to promote disunity.”
Mr. Lane said that he feels all social programs should be voluntary, through civic and church organizations. “I hate to see the government get involved in the American family.”
“We do receive funding from the other four counties (in the planning district),” SAFE’S director pointed out. “State funding is often based on county and local government funding.
“Are you in jeapordy of losing state funding?” Mr. Henry asked.
“No,” she replied. “I just thought yoq might like the opportunity to contribute and support our efforts.” | “There is an opportunity for anyi one in Rappahannock County to contribute; they accept community contributions,” Mr. Miller said. “I think it should stay as it is.”
The consensus of the board was that the appropriation to SAFE not be restored to the budget.
