More serious for the candidate is the quantity of food which he is under pressure to eat; food offered early and late, good food and bad - breakfast, coffee and doughnuts; lunch, coffee and doughnuts; dinner, often a late sandwich before sleep.
In a special category are the foods which are church-related. Churches are especially inclined to serve hot dishes. I knew a politician who claimed he could tell what kind of church dining room he was in by the menu that was being offered. A hot dish of macaroni and ground beef he said was Methodist; the tuna-fish hot dish with noodles he claimed was a variation invented by Catholics for use on Friday when eating fish was the rule. Marble Cake (a mixture of chocolate and vanilla, of brown and white or yellow) eliminated the need to anticipate how the choices of cake, dark or white, might go - reflecting, he said, the doctrinal indeterminacy of the church. A politician’s doctrinal inclination might be indicated by whether he chose a piece of cake with more or less chocolate.
