Following a month of disappointments as neighboring counties refused Rappahannock’s overtures to accept the county’s trash for a limited period, Hubert Gilkey, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, finally had some good news to announce late Tuesday evening.
He and Supervisor Charles K. (Pete) Estes met with the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors Tuesday evening and reached “an agreement in principle” for Culpeper County to accept Rappahannock’s refuse at its landfill for a period of 120 days, beginning July 1. Mr. Gilkey said the precise terms of the service agreement must still be worked out, but the basic arrangement is that Rappahannock will take three loads of Culpeper’s trash for every two loads of Rappahannock’s garbage disposed of there, once the county’s landfill is in operation.
“This will give us a little breathing room,” Mr. Gilkey said. “It’s not much, but every little bit helps.”
Unlike the earlier agreement which was tentatively reached and then voted down by the supervisors of Fauquier and Warren counties, this arrangement does not hinge on the participation of any other counties, Mr. Gilkey said.
