could set a time table for a county* wide egg mass survey and for the coming year, concentrate just on assessing the infestation in the Chester Gap area, Mr. Wood said.
Mr. Wellemeyer suggested asking for volunteers in this early stage rather than trying to find the funding for a paid coordinator. “We can get people involved in the survey.”
Mr. McCarthy said he could handle the planning necessary for the work outlined by the group.
“That’s not a bad approach at all,” concluded Mr. Finn. Release of flying parasites — wasps and flies that are natural gypsy moth predators - could be undertaken along with the educational programs while the county waits to see the extent of the defoliation in the next year or so, he said.
Any grant application that Rappahannock might submit to the Department of Agriculture this fall could be based on defoliation rather than an egg mass survey, Mr. Wood added. “We could get into the survey later.”
“It’s an innovative way to go,” Mr. Finn said. “And it may be the most cost effective.”
As the Department of Agriculture’s representative passed out containers of wasps and flies, the group argeed that Mr. McCarthy and Chairman Gilkey should present the plan to the full board of supervisors. “The board will probably have to set the policy,” Mr. Gilkey added. “Then they’ll be the ones to take the heat.”
